Abstract

For some time, Freudian theories postulating that disorders of the emotions (or affect) have a psychodynamic origin were held in higher esteem than was the thesis of Emil Kraepelin—that affective disorders have a constitutional basis. However, Kraepelin’s concept is now being substantiated by a large body of more recent research findings. Both the Freudian theories and the biological hypotheses for the etiology of mania and depression will be discussed in this chapter.
