Justice Ideology and Social Legitimation

A Revised Agenda for Psychological Inquiry

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Social Justice ((CISJ))

Abstract

Many issues involving justice are contained in the following situation: “John receives a salary of $3.50 per hour.” In its present form, however, we cannot answer the central question, whether this situation is just or fair, without having more information. As we reflect on the kinds of additional information we require, we realize that questions of justice cannot be answered with psychological information alone. We must also attend to features of the larger social world in which the justice-making process resides (see Berger, Zelditch, Anderson & Cohen, 1972; Jasso & Rossi, 1977).
