Abstract

Many antigens recognized by monoclonal antibodies (MAb’s) as tumour markers are carbohydrate structures related to the major blood group system. They represent an inappropriate expression of saccharide antigens for the tissues in question (e.g. due to incomplete biosynthesis). Carbohydrate structures which behave as oncofoetal antigens, and the use of modern methods of oligosaccharide separation and structural analysis in the elucidation of antigenicity, are exemplified in this article.
