Abstract
In this chapter we make some conservative tests of the proposition that school social organization contributes to the explanation of the level of disorder the school experiences. This undertaking is a risky one: cross-sectional measurement-based research is a weak method for making causal inferences. Nevertheless, by carefully delineating the hypothetical causal model and assessing the implications of that model, we can sort hypotheses with merit from those with little support in the data.
