Measurement of the ξ-Parameter in μ-Decay
In a continuing program for improving the knowledge of electron’s observables in muon decay, we propose to make a precise measurement of the integral asymmetry parameter Pμξ1. Our objective is to reach an accuracy of 1 × 10−3 with an intermediate step of 2 × 10−3. To do so we require muons of known high transverse polarization and no depolarization of these muons before they decay. To solve this problem a novel approach will be used which utilizes both pion and muon decay in flight. To measure Pμξ we will use a decay-electron-detector sensitive to the emission of electrons parallel and antiparallel to Pμ and to the full range of electron energies.
