Abstract
School desegregation is a phenomenon that must be understood in relation to the context in which it occurs. It is an ecological event involving virtually every American institution and social process. It is rooted in such basic social realities as racial and social class segregation; it involves major American institutions including the school and the family; and remedies proposed and implemented have rested on the Constitution and a growing body of case law.
