Indium-111 Platelets in Thromboembolism: Can Labeled Platelets be Used to Evaluate Antithrombotic Therapy?

Venous and arterial thromboembolism continue to represent a major cause of morbidity and mortality in populations around the world. For several decades, intense investigative interest has focused upon the major forms of thromboembolism: coronary thrombosis with its potential consequence of myocardial infarction; cerebral thromboembolism with its consequences of transient ischemic attacks and/or cerebral infarction; and venous thrombosis and its potentially lethal complication, pulmonary embolism. Add to these major problems those arterial and venous thromboembolic events which can cause impairment in other body organs--the kidney, the lower extremities, the bowel--and the clinical magnitude of the problem is clear.
