Imaging Infection with Indium-111-Labeled Leukocytes

The use of radiolabeled leukocytes for the detection and the localization of infections in patients depends on the inherent physiologic function of these cells to migrate to sites of inflammation. Techniques for radiolabeling leukocytes without destroying their biologic properties have been under development for almost three decades. This development has resulted in the Indium-111 leukocyte scan which has now been widely examined as a promising means for imaging focal infection.
