Abstract

A former President of the Royal Society has expressed his unease at the fact that authors of scientific papers are encouraged to present their work as a logical development and not to clutter up the literature with personal reminiscences, so that it is not clear what part chance and good fortune have played. Having recently retired, I am happy to admit that my theoretical and experimental defects have been largely patched over by a sequence of pieces of extremely good luck.
