Abstract

In certain ways, science progresses in an erratic fashion. Key discoveries suddenly advance our knowledge and understanding in quantum jumps. Many such discoveries are not recognized until much later. This is illustrated by the history of the Nobel prizes, which have often honoured discoveries made decades earlier. Other discoveries are almost immediately perceived as being of paramount significance, such as the recent use of restriction enzymes in gene splicing techniques for genetic manipulation.
