Immunology of the Platelet Surface

Although the platelet is not an effector cell of the immune system, it interacts with soluble products of the immune system in several ways. Its susceptibility to attack by antibodies arising either spontaneously or after blood transfusion, pregnancy, or ingestion of certain drugs has been known for a long time. The resulting platelet destruction causes major clinical problems. Platelets are also activated by products of antibody reaction with nonplatelet antigens. The exact role of platelet activation by these substances in normal body function or in disease is not yet fully understood.
