Diagnostics of Solar and Astrophysical Plasmas Dependent on Autoionization Phenomena

Abstract

This chapter shows atomic physicists how calculations involving autoionization effects are useful to astrophysicists. The calculations are important when incorporated into spectroscopic diagnostic tools used to determine physical conditions in astrophysical plasmas. The discussion here is limited to the interpretation of spectral line intensities at ultraviolet and shorter wavelengths, and, therefore, the corresponding emphasis is on calculations involving highly ionized atoms.
