Factors Influencing the Carnitine-Dependent Oxidation of Fatty Acids in the Heart

Abstract

The availability of fatty acids is a dominating factor in the regulation of the rate of fatty acid oxidation in the heart. When the heart is offered both fatty acids and glucose, fatty acids are the preferred substrate, even in the presence of insulin. Uptake and oxidation increase with the concentration of free fatty acids in the perfusion fluid. With high concentrations of fatty acids (0.75 mM on 2% albumin) 80–90% of the total CO2 produced in the normal heart will be derived from the fatty acids (1–3).
