Are Tissue Non-Esterified Fatty Acids (NEFA) Involved in the Impairment of Biochemical and Mechanical Processes during Acute Regional Ischemia in the Heart

Abstract

After extraction from capillary blood by myocardial tissue, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) can either be oxidized to deliver energy for electromechanical processes, taken up in fatty acid stores as triacylglycerides, or incorporated in membrane structures as glycerophospholipids. Beside these useful roles of NEFA for myocardial function, detrimental effects of these fatty acids have been described. Raised plasma levels of NEFA have been suggested to induce or facilitate arrhythmias in patients with myocardial infarction (1) or to extend the infarcted area (2). In vitro experiments with isolated enzymes and subcellular fractions have shown that NEFA can inhibit enzyme activities and mitochondrial energy production (for reviews see 3, 4).
