High Level Transcription of a Human Gene in HTLV Positive T-Cells: cDNA Cloning and Characterization

Human T-cell Leukemia Lymphoma Virus is associated with ATL (Acute T-cell Leukemia) or related diseases (Sezary syndrome, mycosis fungoides) (1–4): in a very high percentage its provirus genome is integrated in human DNA in one or more copies, with complete or defective sequences (5). The genome of HTLV contains two LTR sequences at 3′ and 5′ ends with an unusually long R sequence, the regions that code for viral proteins “gag”, “pol”, “env”, and a region called “pX” constituted of small reading frames with no homology with the normal human DNA. It doesn’t seem to contain any typical “onc” gene (11,12) (fig.1).
