Neuro-Hormonal Control of Exocrine Pancreatic Secretion in Humans and Animals

Abstract

It is generally believed and written in many current medical text books that gastrointestinal hormones play a dominant physiological role in the control of pancreatic exocrine secretion in response to a meal. Many effects of vagal cholinergic nerves on pancreatic secretion are believed to be due to indirect effects on hormone release rather than direct effects on the pancreas. However, several recent studies support an important role for direct cholinergic vagal regulation of both enzyme and bicarbonate secretion from the pancreas.
