Abstract
The first concrete demonstration that fetal testicular hormones have permanent influences on reproductive behavior potentials of mammals was provided by a report published in 1959 by Phoenix, Goy, Gerall, and Young. Inspired by several isolated studies appearing in the late 1930s (Dantchakoff, 1938a,b,c), Phoenix et al. showed that the administration of testosterone to pregnant guinea pigs resulted in female offspring that displayed high levels of malelike mounting behaviors when tested in adulthood. Moreover, these females were severely impaired in their ability to perform the typical female sexual pattern. This seminal paper founded an entirely new research area within the field of behavioral endocrinology. Before that time, considerable information was available on the mechanism by which various components of sexual morphology emerged, but virtually nothing was known about the differentiation of behavior into male and female patterns.
