A linguist’s and semiologist’s opinion regarding a structural analysis of the Civil Code can obviously pertain only to principles and methods used and not to the accuracy of the data or the correctness of their application in the domain of history and theory of law, these being assumed to have been ensured by the jurists themselves. This said, Andre-Jean Arnaud’s essay,1 because of the field he has chosen and the approach he propounds, is a very original one.
