The term “station blackout” refers to the complete loss of alternating current (AC) electrical power to the essential and nonessential switchgear buses in a nuclear power plant. Station blackout, therefore, involves the loss of offsite power concurrent with the failure of the onsite emergency AC power system. Because many safety systems required for reactor core decay heat removal and containment heat removal are dependent on AC power, the consequences of station blackout could be severe.
