Medical-Legal Issues

The poor ability of our legal systems to come to satisfactory terms with scientific and medical advances has often been criticized. It would be difficult to find a better example of this than the succession of confused and inconsistent legal pronouncements in cases of transsexualism. The medical-legal literature on the debate is now extensive; however, the principal issues can be identified fairly clearly, even though satisfactory resolutions are rarely available. This chapter will review the main areas in which the transsexual and the law may interact.
