Psychiatric emergencies that occur in the context of ongoing psychotherapy can share many of the features of crises that present to the emergency room: manifest symptomatology, etiology, diagnostic labels, and course. There is a notable difference, however, that strictly distinguishes the focus and orientation of intervention in these two settings.
