Fluorescence of Hematoporphyrin-Derivative for Detection and Characterization of Tumors
Hematoporphyrin-Derivative (HpD) is well known for its tumor specificity and its photodynamic effect in photoradiation therapy. HpD is also fluorescent, and can be used to detect and localize tumors such as in fluorescence endoscopy. There is also the possibility that the differential accumulation of HpD may vary not only between benign and malignant states, but at various stages in the transformation of normal cells to malignancy, permitting the fluorescence of HpD to serve as an indicator of the transformation. The concentration of HpD in the tumor and in surrounding nonmalignant tissue is needed to plan the therapy because the absorbed dose in photoradiation therapy is proportional to the concentration of HpD, and the space irradiance or energy flux density of the light at the dose point. Fluorescence may serve as an indicator of HpD concentration if corrections are made for competing absorption.
