Bistability in External-Cavity Semiconductor Lasers

Semiconductors have been demonstrated to be promising materials for optical logic devices. Since they possess large absorption coefficients the optical interaction length can be very small and interaction times can be made short. They also can have sharp absorption features which provide for large dispersive nonlinearities near a band edge or exciton resonance.
