Abstract

Dr. Silver, besides developing these organisms for degradation of persistent chemicals in particular environments, it may be very useful to have particular organisms as tools for monitoring the presence, in this case, of heavy metals, and heavy metals of particular chemical species. Such monitoring could be useful to follow environmental pathways, to determine the extent of a problem, and to assess the success, if any, in a clean-up program. Would you comment, especially with regard to the kinds of strains you have developed and which you study?
