The term rehabilitation presumes the loss of skill and efficiency. This may be due to “disuse atrophy” phenomenon occasioned by the lack of use of skillas a result of long illness with or without hospitalization. It may also be due to the nature of the illness. There is some evidence that patients who have been hospitalized for a long time require more time for rehabilitation than those who have been ill for an equal length of time but not hospitalized for as long — or not hospitalized at all.
