The many benefits of our modern, industrial society are accompanied by some political, economical, and environmental hazards. Careful assessment of the relative risk of existing environmental hazards is necessary for the establishment of regulatory policies. These regulations serve to enhance the quality of our environment. Thus, one of their primary objectives is to establish and maintain a broad surveillance and evaluation program concerned with the extent and significance of the contamination of man and his environment by organic and inorganic compounds.
