Abstract

In the Laocoön Group, an ancient Greek sculpture that now stands in the Vatican, a father and his two sons are being crushed to death by sea serpents. The work shows about as much emotion as can be carved into marble. The father’s body struggles to free itself from the writhing coils of the serpents. Every feature on his tortured face strains in fear, hopelessness, agony, and the recognition that death awaits his sons and himself.
