Calmodulin and Human Inflammatory Reactions

Abstract

Calmodulin is a low-molecular-weight Ca2+-binding protein, which influences numerous Ca2+-mediated intracellular processes in a variety of tissues and is thus considered to be an important regulator of cellular metabolism (1,2). The presence of calmodulin has been demonstrated in human (3) and animal leukocytes (4,5). This protein controls a variety of enzymes including cyclic AMP phosphodiesterase (6), adenylate cyclase (7) and phospholipase A2 (8,9). Calmodulin may also be involved in the regulation of microtubular assembly and disassembly (10,11).
