The Family of Proteins Having Internal Thiolester Bonds

  • R. A. Harrison

Abstract

It is over fifty years since the complement component C4 was first described as being ammonia and hydrazine sensitive (1). Ecker, Pillemer and Seifter (2) later confirmed this sensitivity of C4 to nitrogen nucleophiles, and in 1953 both a plasmatic inhibitor of serum and “Factor A” of the properdin pathway were shown to be inactivated by hydrazine (3,4). However, it was not until 1968 that the plasmatic inhibitor was identified as α2-macroglobulin and 1972 that the hydrazine-sensitive factor of the properdin or alternative pathway of complement was shown to be C3 (5,6).
