A Glucose-Sensitive Glycoprotein Recognition System on Rat Hepatic Endothelial Cells

Hepatic sinusoidal cells were isolated for study of receptors which recognize N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) and mannoseterminated glycoproteins, one of which was used as a tool for investigating uptake. This was specific and saturable, and was strongly inhibited by certain carbohydrates, including glucose (competitive) and especially a glucose-albumin conjugate. A 24-hour fast raised the apparent vmax. Diabetic rats showed a fall in the fractional disappearance rate, hepatic accumulation and catabolism of the labelled glycoprotein. It appears that fasting increases the receptor population.
