The Structure of Mitochondrial Ubiquinol:Cytochrome c Reductase

Abstract

Ubiquinol:cytochrome c reductase (cytochrome reductase, EC 1.10.2.2.) is a major enzyme complex of the mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation system. The enzyme catalyzes the electron transfer from ubiquinol to cytochrome c and utilizes the energy of the redox reaction to translocate protons across the mitochondrial inner membrane. The transmembranous electrochemical proton gradient can be used by the ATP syn-thetase complex to drive the synthesis of ATP from ADP and phosphate (for review, see Wikström et al., 1981).
