Neurochemistry of Invertebrates

This chapter attempts to cover some of the recent studies in invertebrates concerned with the biochemical properties of the “classical” neurotransmitters, ACh, 5-HT, DA, and GABA,* as well as some “putative” neurotransmitters, including glutamate and a few peptides. Such properties as distribution, synthesis and breakdown, uptake and transport, and isolation of receptors are discussed when information warrants. Detailed discussion of analytical procedures has been avoided, although it goes without saying that many of these studies could not have been carried out without sophisticated techniques for separation and detection. Information regarding specific methods that concerns sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility, etc. will have to be obtained from the original articles.
