Immunohistochemistry of Cell Markers in the Central Nervous System

Abstract

In a tissue such as the central nervous system (CNS), where cellular heterogeneity is at the very basis of the functioning of the system, techniques that permit the dissection of the tissue at the cellular and possibly ultrastructural level are fundamental. For years, the chasm between neurochemistry on the one hand and neurophysiology and neuromorphology on the other has always been that existing between homogenates of whole tissue and the function of a particular cell type. Regional distribution studies performed sometimes after lesions, cellular and subcellular fractionations, and “punch techniques” were for years the only methods available to the neurochemist for localization studies. A sole exception is that for molecules with activity that could be revealed by histochemical methods.
