Instrumentation and Monitoring

Abstract

Instrumentation has many uses in the successful evolution and operation of advanced coal utilization schemes, all of which involve promoting chemical reactions between coal and other reactants, such as air or oxygen, steam, hydrogen, limestone, or catalysts, in closed vessels. “Instrumentation” refers to any system by means of which information is obtained about the conditions inside these vessels or the pipes leading to and from them. This chapter will discuss the types and uses of instrumentation in advanced coal utilization systems and the special difficulties in making instruments operate in the hostile conditions present in advanced coal systems. Each major process variable (flow, temperature, composition, etc.) is then considered and surveyed for available and developmental instrumentation to monitor that variable, describing the principle of operation, limitations and major problems associated with use of that instrument, and the current status of the instrument. The reader who wishes more detail on available instrumentation used in the processing industries is referred to the two volume Instrument Engineer’s Handbook edited by Liptak (1969).
