Concluding Remarks

In his opening remarks, Professor Siegbahn raised the question “What is atomic physics?” For that question, one can only give the answer that is given when someone asks about what is physics. Atomic physics is what atomic physicists do, and it is very well described by the kind of reports presented here. What a wonderfully rich and diverse field it is! This is all the more remarkable considering the length of time that it has been reported as dead, first by the nuclear physicists and then by the particle physicists who also included nuclear physics among the dead fields. Atomic physics goes on, and keeps producing surprises.
