Just before World War I, Durkheim and Freud each independently proposed that guilt is an internalization of cultural values. Since then, the field of personality and culture has burgeoned into its now massive proportions. Interdisciplinary studies, involving psychology, sociology, and anthropology, have developed into what is now the field of psychoanalytic anthropology.
