The Receptor on Mast Cells and Related Cells with High Affinity for IgE

Abstract

Mast cells, basophils, and related tumor lines have a glycoprotein on their surface membrane that binds monomeric immunoglobulin E (IgE) with exceptionally high affinity. When the cell-bound IgE reacts with a multivalent antigen the cells rapidly degranulate—a reaction that has been shown to be mediated by the membrane glycoprotein.
