Nutritional Problems in the Elderly

The intent of this chapter is to provide insights to the difficulties inherent in assessing the nutritional status of the elderly. It advocates caution in the interpretation of current age-related nutrition data. The confusing overlap of age with disease is discussed to highlight these difficulties of interpretation. Approaches to assessing estimates of nutritional status and the current nutritional recommendations in the elderly are presented. Finally, geriatric information is provided on areas of broad clinical concern such as nutritional history taking, the hazards of the kitchen, and the interactions of drugs with nutrients. The summary details future research imperatives.
