Suppressor Cells and Cancer: Inhibition of Immune Functions by Macrophages

Abstract

The macrophage may be viewed either as a primordial, poorly differentiated cell, or as a sophisticated mastermind of the immune system (Varesio et al., 1980g). On the one hand, the macrophage resembles the primordial amoeba, perceiving a “foreign” disturbance, engulfing and degrading it. On the other hand, by presenting antigens to the responding cells, macrophages can trigger immune responses and, by delivering inhibitory signals, they can modulate the extent of the responses. All of these attributes may be relevant to the tumor-host relationship. Macrophages could, in fact, modulate the specific antitumor response, exert a nonspecific toxic effect on neoplastic cells, and help to eliminate necrotic material. The ability of macrophages to suppress the immune response in tumor-bearing individuals is the topic of the present discussion.
