Activities of Macrophages Within and Peripheral to the Tumor Mass

  • Chapter
Book cover The Reticuloendothelial System

Abstract

The reaction of the host to the presence of a growing neoplasm is extremely complex, and it seems unlikely that any single discipline will discover why a tumor grows and progresses or why some tumors invoke different reactions than others. Both cellular and humoral reactions can be detected in many instances but how these influence the behavior of the progressing neoplasm, either individually or collectively, is still far from clear. This review, by virtue of the subject matter, is narrow in terms of understanding the immunobiology of cancer, but it is hoped that by understanding how defined systems are involved one may be able to piece together the various known facts to form a more understandable picture.
