The General Hospital Psychiatric Evaluation Unit: Useful Entity or Not?
The structure of university general hospital psychiatry is different from private hospital psychiatry. The Yale University department is similar to many and Figure 1 illustrates that the general hospital section interfaces with yet another social system. Historically the Yale general hospital inpatient psychiatric unit was begun in 1960. Ten to eleven years later it expanded from a 30 bed unit and split into its component functional parts. These, as illustrated in Figure 2 were an Intermediate Stay Unit, mean stay 60 days, a brief stay unit of about a month, and an evaluation/Diagnostic ICU type unit — a change and innovation.
