The Influence of Social Security Systems on Psychosomatic Problems: Introduction to the Symposium

  • Pierre B. Schneider

Numerous phenomena show that during the last decades medicine reached a turning point in its history and is now in a state of crisis following the Hippocratic-Galenic era which lasted until the beginning of the nineteenth century and the scientific rational period which followed, and which saw its apex at the beginning of our century. Today, one studies once more the various aspects of the medical profession and one attempts to understand its aims and its functions, its relations with the patient and with institutions. These relationships penetrate the medical world very deeply through the intervention of social services, various insurance systems, and the economic support of patients.
