Recent Diagnostic Aspects in the Evaluation of Psychogenic Amenorrhea and Impotence

During reproductive life, women experience at monthly intervals remarkable alterations in hormonal output. This is characterized by an impressive increase in serum LH, FSH and estradiol at midcycle followed by a manyfold increase in serum progesterone in the ensuing luteal phase. The events at midcycle hallmark profound changes in the neuroendocrine hypothalamus (1). These involve the arrival of neurotransmitter-related signals to the peptidergic neurons elaborating the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), a decapeptide in nature.
