Physical Principles of Light Scattering

Abstract

A schematic light scattering experiment is sketched in Fig.l. A monochromatic plane wave, linearly polarized, is incident upon a uniform transparent medium. An optical detector placed in the position P reveals the presence of a nonzero light intensity, usually weak, propagating in directions other than that of the reflected and refracted beam. This is what is called scattered light.
