Resistance to Benzomate in Mites

Abstract

Benzomate (ethyl 0-benzoyl 3-chloro-2,6-dimethoxybenzohydroxi-mate) possesses high acaricidal activity against Panonychus mites (Asada and Yoneda, 1971; Sato, 1976) and was first used on citrus in Japan in 1971 for the control of citrus red mites, Panonychus citri (McGregor). However, it was found that resistance of mites to benzomate had developed in a few of these citrus areas in the period of 1973 to 1974 (Yoneda, 1973, unpublished; Mori and Asano, 1975). Mori et al. (1977) and Nishino (1977) reported that citrus red mite populations became resistant to benzomate after three applications of this acaricide in selection tests in the field.
