When Palmer Rogers spent a few months in Washington at the Department of Energy during 1980, we had many opportunities to discuss the developments of basic biology and its application to practical problems. He mentioned the annual colloquia and the visit of Allen Laskin to the University of Minnesota. He was also influential in the symposium on “Trends in the Biology of Fermentations” which was held at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in December of 1980 and assisted with the speedy appearance of the proceedings volume just a few months later. We agreed that a meeting and publication of this type should also be done with the upcoming colloquia planned in Minneapolis for 1982.
