From my personal perspective on the interfaces of science and technology and of academia and industry, the essence of biotechnology is the construction and use of catalytic systems whose structures are determined by a genetic bluprint. This definition seems appropriate whether one deals with isolated enzymes, cells, or organisms. The uses of biotechnology, as other technology, are driven by need (real or perceived) fulfillment.
