Abstract

Mack, the fifty-two-year-old small-boat captain, will tell you that for him fishing is “just a living, only a living.” But he will also admit that he would never consider any other kind of work and has never had any other kind of job “except the army,” and that fishing appeals to him because “I can be independent—no bosses.”
