The elucidation of the molecular mechanisms by which eukaryotic cells modulate the expression of specific genes remains one of the major challenges for modern biochemistry. Since the hypothesis was put forward that steroid hormones act as gene regulators (Karlson, 1961), they have been widely used as inducers in model experimental systems in the hope that clarification of their mechanism of action will help us to understand the process of regulated gene expression. Despite considerable progress, however, the molecular mechanisms underlying hormone control of gene expression remain elusive. Most of what we know at the molecular level comes from avian systems such as the induction of egg-white proteins in the oviduct or vitellogenin in the liver. In these systems both the hormone receptors and the regulated genes have been carefully characterized, but the mechanisms of their interaction are not understood.
