The Neuroethology of Reproduction

Neuroethology is the branch of biological science that deals with the relationship between biologically adaptive behavior patterns and physiological mechanisms. To better understand these responses, neuroethological investigations are directed to uncovering the neural and hormonal mechanisms that control species-typical behavior. Often investigators in this field are not as much concerned with general motor pathways but with the specific pathways that, for example, allow prey capture by amphibia or the sensory mechanisms that allow the birds of a particular species to recognize their natural song (e.g., see H.-J. Leppelsack, this volume).
